Residential Painting FAQs

The best type of paint for interior walls typically depends on the room and its purpose. For high-traffic areas like kitchens and hallways, satin or semi-gloss finishes are durable and easy to clean. For bedrooms and living rooms, matte or eggshell finishes can provide a softer look. Additionally, using low-VOC or no-VOC paints is a good option for reducing indoor air pollutants.

Proper wall preparation involves cleaning the surface to remove dirt, grease, or stains, filling in cracks or holes with spackle, sanding to create a smooth surface, and applying a primer if needed. This ensures the paint adheres properly and results in a smooth, even finish.

The exterior of a home typically needs repainting every 5-10 years, depending on factors like the type of paint used, the local climate, and the surface material (e.g., wood, stucco, brick). Regular inspections for peeling, cracking, or fading can help determine when it’s time to repaint.

Oil-based paints offer durability and are great for surfaces that need a tough finish, such as trim or cabinets. However, they take longer to dry and emit stronger fumes. Water-based paints (also called latex paints) dry quickly, have lower fumes, and are easier to clean up with soap and water. They are commonly used for most residential painting projects.

Primer is necessary when painting over a darker color, applying lighter paint, dealing with stains, or painting porous surfaces like drywall. It helps the paint adhere better and ensures a uniform color and finish. Some paints now include built-in primer, but this may not be sufficient for all situations.

Choosing the right color involves considering the room’s lighting, the mood you want to create, and how the color coordinates with furniture and decor. Testing paint samples on your walls and observing them at different times of the day can help you make an informed decision.

To prevent peeling or cracking, ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free from moisture before painting. Using a primer, selecting high-quality paint, and applying the paint in the correct environmental conditions (not too humid or cold) can also help maintain a long-lasting finish.

  • Matte: Offers a non-reflective finish and is great for hiding imperfections but is less durable.
  • Satin: Slightly reflective, offering a soft sheen that is easy to clean, making it ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Semi-gloss: More reflective and durable, often used for trim, doors, and high-moisture areas

You can often paint over old paint if the surface is in good condition. However, if the old paint is peeling, chipping, or damaged, it should be removed or sanded down first. A primer may also be necessary to ensure proper adhesion and coverage.

Drying time varies depending on the type of paint used and environmental conditions. Water-based paints usually dry to the touch within 1-2 hours and can be recoated after 4-6 hours. Oil-based paints take longer, often needing 6-8 hours to dry to the touch and 24 hours for recoat.

Paint fades due to exposure to sunlight, moisture, and weather conditions over time. Using high-quality, UV-resistant paints and choosing lighter colors can help reduce fading. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the surface, also extends the life of exterior paint.

Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint. You can use a lead test kit available at hardware stores or hire a professional inspector to test for lead. If lead paint is present, it’s crucial to follow safety precautions when removing or painting over it.
